"… the hope of eternal life, which God,
who cannot lie, promised long ages ago
(Titus 1:2)

When we use the word "hope" we often have a very different meaning than the word used in the Bible! Sometimes we say "hope" when we mean "wish." And, it can even be an unfounded wish!

For example, a student doesn't study at all, takes a hard exam and misses every question. Ask the student: "did you pass the test?" and you may get the response: "I hope so!" Hope? No, that is a hollow wish!

The Bible word does not mean wish. It means a strong confidence based on certainties. We have the hope of eternal life and it is a driving confidence that comes from taking God at His word. Look at what Jesus said:

"Truly, truly, I say to you, he who believes has eternal life." (Jn 6:47)

Do you believe in Jesus? Have you trusted in Him as your Savior? Do you have eternal life? Your confidence in His word gives you great hope!

We know for certain that God will keep His word! When the prophet Samuel spoke to the disobedient King Saul he said, "the Glory of Israel, will not lie" (1 Sam. 15:29).

God is the source and measure of all truth. It is forever settled in His nature: it is "impossible for God to lie" (Heb. 6:18). The hymn writer puts it this way:

There is no shadow of turning with Thee
Thou changest not, Thou compassions they fail not
As Thou hast been Thou forever wilt be!" (Great Is Thy Faithfulness)

He has promised eternal life and He cannot lie. Our hope is settled; our hope is sure; our future will be good! He gave His word on it!

Father,
It is so good to know that You have committed Your love to me in the person and work of Jesus! Even if I feel discouraged or I am not sure what will happen next, I know that You have promised to work all things for my good and then one day bring me to heaven.

Your word gives me great confidence.

I worship You as the awesome Creator and Sustainer of life. I have absolute trust in You-You always keep Your word!

My hope is in Jesus…and Great Is Your Faithfulness! Amen.
